Alternative Breast Cancer Survivors: Gayle and Gloria

Gayle Cranford and Gloria Applegate

The two women you will read about today each chose various forms of conventional treatment to start their cancer fight with, but along the way they began to become aware of the effectiveness of alternative therapies and shifted their focus towards natural healing. These are their stories.

Gayle Cranford

I gave Gayle a call this weekend after reading her story in the book “I Beat Cancer.” She was absolutely wonderful to talk to! She has helped over 300 people over the phone with their cancer decisions and is a strong advocate of patient-informed decision making regarding cancer treatment.

In July of 1984 Gayle was first diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. She had a mastectomy and chemotherapy for 4 months. Back then, the standard treatment for her type of breast cancer was a FULL YEAR of chemotherapy, but in December she discontinued her chemotherapy after reading about alternative therapy. She immediately started a nutritional therapy consisting of detoxification with daily coffee enemas, a vegetarian diet, juicing of carrots every day, and taking several supplements designed to support immune system. This regimen was followed faithfully for at least the next 3 years.

In the summer of 1985, she started the Livingston therapy including an autogenous vaccine, other injectables, intravenous vitamins, and other supplements. She added that the Livingston therapy isn’t available any longer, as Dr. Livingston passed away and her vaccine and protocols were not continued by a successor. As of October, 2011 Gayle, now 76 and cancer free for 27 years, continues to help people with their cancer decisions through phone calls. She believes her cancer was cured by dietary change and detoxification. You can reach her over the phone at 717-212-2105.

. Her email address (although she said it will be changing soon so call her if her email doesn’t work) is cranford3111@roadrunner.com.

I have not been able to get a hold of Gloria personally, but I still feel that the small amount of details of her story I have found are worth telling. I have managed to find her on Facebook (Yes- I DO feel like a stalker!) but I am still awaiting a reply to my message and look forward to hearing from her!

In April of 1990 Gloria was diagnosed with her first breast cancer diagnosis. She received a lumpectomy and radiation. Since there was no metastasis (spreading) to the lymph nodes or other organs, she was not recommended chemotherapy. Gloria did not receive any information about nutritional therapy and in June of 1995 her breast cancer reoccurred.

This time she received a mastectomy and chose reconstructive surgery. She chose NOT to do radiation.  Luckily this time there was also no metastasis and again no suggested chemotherapy. She consulted with a nutritionist and received nutritional therapy after surgery. Since I wasn’t able to interview her (I would have asked for much more detail!) I was able to find this small amount of information about her protocol:

  • She drank green juice consisting of spinach, parsley, celery.
  • She consumed wheat grass juice, and eat a lot of greens, such as spinach, broccoli, etc.
  • No junk food
  • Prayer
  • 1995 to date, Jan of 2002, living healthfully and free of cancer

Although the resources I used in my research of Gloria were last dated January of 2002, I did find her on Facebook with status updates from this year so I know she is alive and well. (Again- YES, I feel stalker-ish!) But call me a journalist, and that’s what good (or at least amateur) journalists do. I hope to hear from Gloria soon!
