Tonya Griffin
Today’s survivor is still very active in getting the word out about holistic approaches to cancer treatment. At 21 years old Tonya was first diagnosed with an aggressive Stage II breast cancer. She was in college and didn’t know much about cancer or chemotherapy, but what she had seen is what chemotherapy could do to a person. She decided to research further but meanwhile followed her doctor’s recommendation of a lumpectomy and lymph node removal. However, when it came to the decision about chemotherapy, she went with what she believed was best for her.
Like me, Tonya’s driving force in pursuing holistic methods was the risk of infertility. She wanted so badly to have a family and knew the high rate of infertility and early menopause with traditional cancer treatments.
After her diagnosis, Tonya drastically changed her diet and immersed herself in prayer and meditation on Scripture. She received remission status, but in 1997- 6 years later, the cancer was back. She again received a lumpectomy and dove further into prayer and dietary changes and is now a 20 year survivor!
She says it best in an interview with a local television station in Louisville, Kentucky that provides more detail into her story:
“I believe I’m a medical miracle because according to people who are a whole lot smarter than I am, I should not be alive.”
In 2006 Tonya published a book about her experience called “Eagles, Angels, and Butterflies: How We Got Our Wings.”
