Vitamix TurboBlend VS: $289 – $449
(This post is the first in the ongoing “Ultimate Cancer Fighting Kitchen” series.)
The Vitamix TurboBlend (or 5200) was actually one of the only “cancer fighting” appliances I received BEFORE I was diagnosed with cancer. Costing around $450, I almost forced my husband, Kevin to return it when he gave it to me for my 26th birthday, two months before my cancer diagnosis. I couldn’t believe the price tag! For a BLENDER!!!?? I figured out that the Vitamix cannot be classified as “just a blender,” and it is well worth it’s price tag. It’s an angelic appliance with NASA-quality engineering from the heavens!
Be sure to keep up with this series (and read the rest of this post) for great deals on creating your own cancer fighting kitchen!
The Beginnings of My Cancer Fighting Kitchen…
Prior to my cancer diagnosis in 2008, my main source of cooking was done in my trusty microwave. Within days of making the mental shift to alternative cancer therapies and healthy eating, my kitchen was turned upside down. We even had to buy a “kitchen cart” for our tiny apartment’s living room to hold additional pieces of equipment.
No matter what sacrifices were needed (we also had a rebounder trampoline in the middle of the living room,) my husband and I were determined to have a kitchen and a home that would HELP me become cancer-free.
Following my commitment to pursue alternative therapies, my Vitamix was truly my saving grace. I almost starved to death at the beginning of my holistic cancer protocol because of my resistance to eat salads. It was one fateful night a few days after I began my anti-cancer, raw vegan diet that I placed my salad in my Vitamix, added water, and blended. This led to the birth of Green Drink Diaries, (the original name of this blog) and multi-daily green smoothies over the next 4 years. The Vitamix makes it MUCH easier to consume vegetables because it blends them into a smooth, non-gritty Planet Smoothie/ Tropical Smoothie-esque consistency (both of these smoothie restaurants use Vitamixes to blend their drinks!)
(A side-note to the ladies: I know from personal experience how “revving” the Vitamix engine to guide the fruits and vegetables down into the blade is a big selling point for men, so when convincing the man in your life to purchase a $300-450 “blender” you may want to bring this up! It’s a Formula One race car of blending machines…)
OK, back to the story…
Post-cancer I have used my Vitamix to make mashed sweet potatoes, all of my daughter’s homemade baby food, nut butters, juices before I bought a juicer, and my husband uses it every day to make his fruit/protein smoothies as well.
Overall, this is my NUMBER ONE purchase for making a switch to a more healthful and nourishing, anti-cancer diet.
Green Drink Diaries offers Vitamix machines both NEW ($449 with 7-year warranty) and RECONDITIONED ($299 with 5-year warranty), with free shipping, warranty, included accessories, an instructional DVD and a juicing filtration bag with new models. Next in the “Ultimate Cancer Fighting Kitchen” Series:
Could you please advise me if the Vitamix can be used for juicing? Or do we need to get rid of the fiber , to treat cancer? I have stage 3 ovarian cancer.
Thank you
Hi Lucille,
It really depends on your treatment protocol on whether to juice more or make smoothies. If you are choosing a protocol like Gerson Therapy you will want to purchase a separate juicer because you juice A LOT. If you’re an occasional juicer you can definitely use the Vitamix….just blend the ingredients as if it were a smoothie, and strain the pulp out with a nut milk bag. Here’s a quick video of someone doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDWzN2eD78o
I’ve made major changes in my life over the past two years. I have gone from 200 to 155 back up to 180 now down back to 165/175. I am training for an event in which I required loads of nutrients. I couldn’t possibly attain said nutrition without the vitamix. It has helped me quit smoking after 11 years. It has given me life back. I am vegetarian to the max. I can’t consider myself vegan because I own animal products and I am not opposed to it. I am by health standard as close as you can get to vegan with out being so though. The event I’m training for is the Olympics. Yes ” the Olympics” haha it’s hard especially since I’m human and want a social life. Anyway… Vitamix not only restored my faith in food being medicine it rocket fueled me on a path from which there is no return and only greatness shall come from it. Feel free to email me as I don’t want to monopolize your comment feed with my ramblings. good day/night.
YES, I love the Vitamix like crazy, too!! 🙂
Hi! Love your blog! The link does not seem to be working, though. Thanks!
Good for you in making the switch to healthier cooking! That takes effort and dedication. I don’t have a powerful blender, but must admit it’s tempting for soups. I’ll keep the vitamix in mind. ~Catherine
Thanks Catherine! It’s been a journey of almost 5 years now, but the Vitamix is a huge help in the kitchen. I can’t imagine some of the smoothies I drink with a gritty texture.
