Vanilla Cinnamon Anti-Cancer Budwig Smoothie

Budwig-Vanilla-Smoothie

This week has been really active with the Bill Henderson Protocol Facebook group I moderate. You can usually chat with me there throughout the week, and one of our favorite topics right now is recipes for Dr. Budwig’s Cottage Cheese/ Flaxseed Oil mixture. There are many tasty ways to make it, but my favorite lately has been this one: The Vanilla Cinnamon Budwig Smoothie!

For those of you not familiar with Dr. Budwig’s research on the relation between fats and cancer, here is a brief excerpt from a previous post I wrote explaining the science behind WHY this mixture is cancer fighting and healing all at the same time:

“Dr. Budwig discovered the reason why our healthy cells become anaerobic in the first place.  According to her, it is quite simple:  Basically, in order for our bodies’ cells to process oxygen as fuel, they need certain enzymes to be present in the fat content of the foods we eat.  However, because so much of the Standard American Diet (SAD diet) consists of chemically-treated, processed, sugar-laden, denatured foods, the necessary enzymes our bodies require for cellular respiration have been destroyed and in some cases even replaced bymanufactured fats (i.e. trans fats) which are completely useless to the body.  Over time, this sets up a whole host of problems from heart disease, to skin and lung problems, to brain and liver problems, to diabetes and immune deficiency syndromes, to cancer and more!  Simply put, to remain HEALTHY, our cells NEED to be able to process oxygen, and the Budwig diet provides this!…but HOW?

[The paraphrased science continues!] Dr. Budwig discovered that when she combined sulfur-rich proteins like cottage cheese with highly unsaturated fatty acids (rich in omega-3’s) like those found in flaxseed oil, the unsaturated fatty acids bonded molecularly with the sulphuric proteins. This bond made the flaxseed oil water-soluble, enabling it to be absorbed instantly and effortlessly through the cellular membrane.  In turn, the instant flood of vital nutrients and essential enzymes to the cells (remember, the enzymes were what was missing in the first place) acted as a spark that re-ignited their ability to burn oxygen, thus restoring ALL cells to a healthy aerobic state – INCLUDING cancer cells!  In other words, Dr. Budwig discovered that this simple mixture, in effect, allowed cancer cells to ‘breathe’ again, returning them to their healthy, normal state, and thereby ridding the body of cancer!”

For the first few years of eating the cottage cheese/ flaxseed oil mixture, I had a really hard time with the texture and oily fullness of the mix, but this smoothie is a perfect way to get around this. Maybe you can give it a try this week and let me know what you think! 🙂

NOTE: As the Budwig mixture oxidizes quickly, please consume within 15 minutes of blending.

  1. OMGosh! I love it. I added raspberries to mine which I don’t think will hurt. Best smoothie I made so far. I was just mixing cottage cheese and flax seed oil along with ground up flax seed and found it unbearable to eat. I am so called I found this site. More so, glad I found a smoothie recipe to fight the same thing. Thank you.

  2. At what point did you switch from basic budwig protocol to making budwig smoothies? If you had cancer would you stick with strick basic protocol or go with the budwig smoothies?

    • Hey Craig, great question. I’m not sure- I’d go with my gut I guess. The way that I make the smoothie protects the integrity of the Budwig mixture, so I think I would continue to drink the smoothie. I started making smoothies after my 3rd daughter was born to drink it on the go!

      • Hi
Myself Madhulika….I am sufferring with stage III-C Ovarian Cancer. I am following your CCFO diet from last 4 days and i am little bit confused that should i mix some alkaline water in it as I do not like the smell of Flaxeed Oil….I am diebetic and have BP high problem. Is this diet safe for my high BP?
Is this diet will work in my Ovarian cancer stage III-C

  3. What stevia do you suggest? I usually put raw egg yolks in our smoothies. Is there some reason that you avoid eggs or I do not see it in your diet? I could be missing. Lastly, I have read that kale is best digested cooked… But you must feel otherwise! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  4. I love reading your blog! I do have one question though: as I am EXTREMELY allergic to milk and all milk products, would it be okay to use my homemade coconut yougurt instead of the cottage cheese? I have tried all forms of dairy (organic cottage cheese, kefir, etc) and absolutely cannot do it. (I break out in extreme hives with swelling and burning skin every time). I dsparately want this to work, having been diagnosed with lung cancer (non-smoker) and having gone through surgery already, scheduled to see oncologist next week (against my wishes!) Can someone please advise?

    • Hi Karyn, Dr. Budwig did her research exclusively with quark and later recommended cottage cheese for use in the U.S. She never advised with a plant-based alternative. You can try it with coconut kefir but it’s the SULFURIC protein that must be there. I’m not sure that would have it. Best to you!!!

  5. We tried it with strawberries and it was a success! Someone is doing a happy dance:)
We did mix the Budwig mixture first with the immersion blender and then added the milk, strawberry and stevia mixture by hand. A little more work but I’d rather play it safe. Thanks for this, you’re Pablo’s hero today:)

    • Just a note, I reD the EWG’s list of unsafe/ safe produce and Strawberries top the list of The Dirty Dizen this year. Must buy organic and wash thoroughly.

  6. Sounds yummy! I’m curious as to why you specified no carrageenan in the almond milk? Which brands do not have this? We drink almond milk and coxnut milk in our home but it’s hard to find some with no sugar and organic and non gmo…and I believe the kind we have had carrageenan in it. Also…I am lactose intolerant…I always have been (my mom and grandpa too)…do you think the cottage cheese would cause more irritation than good. I get have flatulence with milk (cow) products. Thank you for any feedback! Your time, research and sharing of cruicial info through your blogs is wonderfully put together and I’m sure is a blessing to many!

    • Hi Tanya- Whole Foods 365 brand unsweetened organic almond milk is free of carrageenan and most other preservatives as well. It’s my favorite store bought almond milk. Although it’s not organic, Silk brand is non-GMO and does not include carrageenan either, although if I had cancer I’d definitely get the 365 brand I mentioned above or make my own! As long as your milk allergy isn’t life-threatening, I’d give the Budwig a try. Many people report no problem with it even they’re lactose intolerant. 🙂

  7. Hi Cortney,
Each morning my husband and I take 2tbs flaxseed (freshly milled) mixed with organic, pasteurised milk. Would this mixture satisfy the Budwig Protocol or would you need to use the cottage cheese to get the enzymes. Being able to mix this by hand and drink it easily suits us as we don’t have reliable access to the oil. My husband has non Hodgkin follicular lymphoma. THANKYOU.

    • Dr. Budwig was very convinced that the protein used with the flax seed oil should be high in sulfuric protein…like quark or in the U.S. cottage cheese. YOGURT is not high enough in sulfuric protein so much more should be used…so I’m imagining milk would be similar in its lack of sulfuric protein. She used the flax seeds as well as the oil in combination. Have you tried getting it shipped straight from Barleans Oils? In the past they have shipped straight to consumer from their headquarters if a customer has cancer.

  8. I have always been taught and share with others the perspective of not using a normal blender for Dr. Budwig’s protocol but a stick immersion blender on low, as indicated. Also it is important to know what can or can not be added to the Basic Budwig. Anything I have read (including her book “The Budwig Cancer and Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Diet”) explains that nothing should be blended into but only hand mixed if added further ingredients.

“The oil and the cottage cheese must be thoroughly mixed at a low speed, using an Immersion Blender, blending until a creamy texture with no standing oil is achieved.
The mixture should then be immediately consumed!!
Do not add anything to the mixture until AFTER it is mixed!!
We have always recommended using the immersion [stick or wand like] mixer for the Flax Seed Oil and Cottage Cheese.”

  9. Sounds wonderful! I think my husband may even like this one. Thank you so much for all the great information and encouragement!

  10. I always look forward to your posts! I have read that if you do the Budwig protocol and stop, it doesn’t work as well the second time around. Do you know anything about that? Is this something you can do for cancer prevention too?

    • Hi Meagan, Dr. Budwig does mention that patients that don’t continue the protocol for at least 5 years tended to relapse. I believe this had more to do with the cancer and nutrition of the patient rather than it “doing something” to the behavior of the cancer. If you are stopping to pursue another treatment, then you’re still addressing the cancer. I’m thinking she means it would tend to come back if you stopped and then did nothing. Just my thoughts!

  11. I read somewhere that is was recommended to mix the CC and FO with immersion blender first before mixing/adding it in the blender with other items to make a smoothie? It does take more time and work to mix with the immersion blender as a 1st step then blender 2nd step but I am hesitant to just mix it first in the blender. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you so much for a wonderful site and all of the information you share. God bless and so encouraged to know you are doing so well. We need more stories like yours.

  12. This is over 900 calories. There is no way this would work for me. I only eat about 1200 calories for the whole day.

    • Hi Susan, YES- this would be a problem if you were eating a Standard American Diet. If you’re following the Budwig Protocol or Bill Henderson Protocol for cancer though, the rest of your diet would be made up of organic vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, and possibly a few servings of wild-caught or organic meat a week and you would NOT have a problem with gaining weight. I ate this way for 5 years after my cancer diagnosis and if anything had trouble keeping weight ON. When you get rid of processed foods, amazing things happen. 🙂 But to each their own. It will not be a good fit for everyone and that’s ok!

    • Hi Linda! A lot of people add nuts and fruit to the mixture as well (And eat it from a bowl,) but if you add it to the smoothie it can get VERY filling and hard to drink the whole thing within the 15 minutes after blending it that Dr. Budwig recommends of her mixture. 🙂 The craziest thing I’ve heard of people adding to the Budwig mixture is SALSA and eating carrot sticks with it! Hmmm…

  13. I’ve been doing the Budwig Protocol to heal my stomach issues. This looks like it will serve two adults. Is that right? Also, I have raw milk so I will use that rather than almond milk unless there’s a specific reason to use the almond? Thank you!

    • Hi Sally! It makes about 16 ounces and I drink the whole thing myself. As long as you’re not dairy sensitive, I imagine sticking with your raw milk would be fine. Some people healing from cancer naturally choose to avoid all dairy with exception of the Budwig.

  14. I enjoy your posts, THANKS!!!!!!
I am so anxious to get my next blood work!
When the Dr. announced the diagnosis I said: “I’m only 75. I ain’t done yet.”
During my last check up the Dr. noticed the improvements and said “These things vary”. When I told the oncologist (I do not “do” chemo) “That’s by design”. He ordered more tests!
I include kale in my smoothies and recently, (I had forgotten) read the nutritional value of katuk which has so much more nutritional in value than spinach and is especially high in protein. I now include a handful of the leaves in my smoothies. We are able to grow katuk (kind’a like a shrub) here in Southwest Florida. I mention it in case others have availability and don’t know the value.
    Any way, thanks again
    Ain’t God good!!!!
